Putting Texas Native Plants Into More Hands

Whether staffing a booth at a plant sale, leading a nature walk, or simply talking with a neighbor, Texas Master Naturalist Volunteers often hear the same questions:

What should I plant?
Will it grow in my yard?
Where can I find them?

For someone new to native plants, those questions can feel intimidating at first. Even experienced gardeners often find themselves piecing together information from several different resources.

That's why the Wild Thumb app caught my attention—not simply because it's another gardening app, but because it brings together expertise of organizations already working toward the same goal: helping Texans grow landscapes that benefit wildlife and people alike.

Collaboration with Intent

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation (TPWF) Pollinators & Prairies program launched in 2024 with the goal of increasing pollinator populations and healthy prairie habitat. Every native plant grown in a pot, bed, or prairie helps support a thriving native ecosystem that is both beautiful and functional.

The Wild Thumb app is a tangible result of this TPWF initiative and represents collaboration rather than a single organization's vision. The Native Plant Society of Texas and professional botanists contributed expert input to the plants database, while H-E-B and Phillips 66 provided funding. The result is a resource built on Texas expertise rather than generic gardening advice.

Why It Matters to Texas Master Naturalists

As Texas Master Naturalists, we have the joyful obligation to answer questions, educate, and encourage stewardship of our beautiful state. Wild Thumb doesn't replace those conversations—it extends them. Instead of sending someone home with a plant list they'll eventually lose, we can recommend a resource they'll continue using long after the event is over. The app is a helpful tool for experimenting and learning at one's own pace in an unintimidating format.

A Tool That Grows With You

One of Wild Thumb's biggest strengths is that it meets people where they are in their native plant journey. Someone creating their first pollinator bed can use it to discover plants suited to their yard, while more experienced gardeners, Master Naturalists, and landscape professionals can use it to refine ideas or sketch designs on-site.

Rather than asking users to jump between plant databases, nursery websites, design software, and care guides, Wild Thumb brings those resources together in a single Texas-focused tool.

Find the Right Plant for the Right Project

Wild Thumb guides you through the process of selecting plants based on the project type, light requirements, and site layout. The recommendations are tailored to Texas native plants, helping users choose species more likely to thrive in their landscapes.

Each plant profile goes beyond basic identification. Users can learn about bloom periods, wildlife benefits, growing conditions, and other characteristics that help explain why a plant belongs in a particular landscape. Instead of simply answering, "What is this?" the app encourages users to ask, "What role does this plant play in the ecosystem?"

Build a Garden as You Explore

One feature that sets Wild Thumb apart is the ability to create simple garden layouts directly within the app. Whether you're planning a new pollinator bed or experimenting with ideas before purchasing plants, the design tools make it easy to visualize the size of mature plants and how different species work together. For Master Naturalists helping homeowners or community groups, it's a convenient way to illustrate possibilities in conversation rather than relying on imagination alone.

 From Planning to Planting

Wild Thumb also helps bridge the gap between choosing plants and successfully growing them. Features like nursery information, planting reminders, and project management tools help users stay engaged long after they've downloaded the app. That continued guidance can make all the difference in someone's success when planting natives for the first-time.

Growing Alongside Texas

Bringing these tools together in one place is one reason Wild Thumb has been embraced by so many Texans. Since its launch, the app has continued to grow, reflecting the increasing interest in native plants and pollinator-friendly landscapes across the state.‍ ‍

Since May 2026:

  • 24,700+ users onboarded

  • 15,675+ total projects created

  • 3,990+ Pot Type projects

  • 9,510+ Bed Type projects

  • 2,170+ Pocket Prairie projects

Each of these projects represents the collective effort of individual Texans coming together to create meaningful habitats for all creatures to grow and thrive.

Give it a Try!

Every conversation about native plants is an opportunity to make conservation a little more accessible. Wild Thumb gives us another way to connect people with reliable, Texas-based information wherever they are—whether standing in a nursery, planning a backyard, or attending one of our outreach events.

If you haven't explored it yet, download the app and spend a few minutes building a garden of your own. Then consider sharing it with the next person who asks, "What should I plant?"
