On September 19, Hays County Master Naturalist (HCMN) volunteers gathered at Sentinel Peak Preserve—not to work, but to be celebrated. Hosted by Hays County Parks and Natural Resources staff, namely Katherine Sturdivant and Jessica Wollin, the Volunteer Appreciation Day served as a heartfelt thank-you to the volunteers who give so much of their time and energy throughout the year.

“Words cannot express the gratitude we have for each and every one of you. The dedication, energy, passion, and hours spent caring for and educating at our natural spaces truly make a profound difference. You are the heart and soul of what we do! We're so lucky!!” —Hays County Parks and Natural Resources Staff

The day was a reminder that behind every thriving natural space are people who care deeply and who deserve to be celebrated.

“What makes today so meaningful is not just the appreciation, but the partnership behind it. Our relationship with Katherine and Jessica is built on mutual respect and a shared love for these natural spaces—and that’s what makes celebrations like this truly special.”—HCMN Project Coordinators

A Day of Food, Fun, and Friendship

Under clear skies, everyone enjoyed hot dogs from the grill and potluck sides contributed by staff and HCMN members. Some paddled along or floated the river, while others relaxed in the shade, taking time to simply unwind together in a place they love.

The event was more than a celebration—it was a testament to the strong partnership between Hays County Parks and the Hays County Master Naturalists, a relationship rooted in shared stewardship, respect, and a love for the land.
